What Is Male Cosmetic Surgery?

Our society places a high value on looking young, fit, and attractive, regardless of one's gender. As recently as a generation ago, it was unusual for men to seek cosmetic improvement other than at the barber shop or tailor. Nowadays, men of all ages and all walks of life are requesting Plastic Surgery to achieve a variety of objectives. These may include the desire for a more balanced nose, the need for correction of puffy, or tired-appearing eyes, and the wish for restoration of a sagging cheek, jowl, and neck line. Often, men would simply like to get rid of the annoying "spare tire" or "love-handles" that come with age. As with women, who have come to accept Plastic Surgery as a means to restore or enhance their natural beauty, many men now consider Plastic Surgery as an important and useful tool in maintaining or enhancing their masculine appeal. Depending upon the type of procedure, several factors, such as skin thickness, beard growth, hairline or balding pattern, and body type, must be taken into account, in order to reach these goals. In conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and attention to diet and exercise, cosmetic surgery can help restore a man's youthful vitality.

Planning Your Surgery Procedure

Dr. Cambre will evaluate your health, conduct a physical exam, take pre-operative photographs, and explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for you. You can be completely assured that Dr. Cambre will take the time to allow you to express your concerns and desires, and that all your questions will be answered. You will discuss the type of anesthesia to be used, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, and the possible risks.

Your consultation will extensively cover information on your operation. Dr. Cambre will discuss a number of factors that may influence your surgery. In order to insure that you fully understand these considerations, be prepared to discuss your wishes and concerns regarding the areas in which you desire to see improvement.
Good communication is essential. Above all, it is important to have realistic expectations about your surgery.

Male Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

Generally speaking, the procedures are done in much the same way as previously described in the individual sections in which they are covered in greater detail. There are a few subtle differences in incision planning and placement that apply differently to men versus women because of hair and beard growth patterns. Post-operative care and instructions are generally the same for men and women.

Male Facial Surgery ( Necklift,Facelift )

If you are planning facial surgery or neck surgery, Dr. Cambre will evaluate your entire head-face-neck region. Multiple factors, such as position of the hairline, sideburns, beard growth, sun damage, neck skin laxity, and existing facial scars, must be taken into account. In general, male facial skin has a richer blood supply than female facial skin. As a result, men have a somewhat greater risk for forming a small collection of blood under the skin, called a hematoma, after surgery. Also, the incisions may be more difficult for men to hide, since men do not wear make-up or style their hair toward their faces, as many women do.

Hair growth and beard growth may play a major role in the outcome of a Facelift. If you are balding or have thinning hair, surgical artistry may be required to hide the Facelift incision, especially in the temple area. If the hair-bearing skin of your upper neck is pulled behind your ears during surgery, you may find that you must shave behind your ears or the back of your neck. However, electrolysis or some of the newer hair-removal lasers can correct this problem. Be sure to discuss these possibilities with Dr. Cambre.

A fatty or "jowly" area beneath the chin is also a concern for many men. In younger patients, Liposuction alone may be sufficient to correct the problem. Older patients may require a full Facelift and Neck Lift, which may include the removal of excess skin and tightening the platysma muscles, which run down each side of the neck. These muscles are usually thicker in men than they are in women, but do not pose a greater challenge.

Male eyelide surgery

In many cases, the appearance of puffy bags and sagging, excess, wrinkled skin around the eyelids is the first sign of facial aging in men, who often tend to be less concerned with the appearance of other signs of facial aging in the nasolabial fold, jowls, and neck. Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) can correct these signs of aging around the eyes, while maintaining a masculine appearance and rugged character to the rest of the face. The incisions are generally inconspicuous, and the results can be appreciated almost immediately.

Refinishing Treatments for Male facial Surgery

Shaving must be postponed for about 3 weeks after a skin-smoothing treatment such as chemical peel or dermabrasion. Because these procedures strip away the surface layers of skin, you can expect your face to remain sensitive, swollen and pink for several weeks after surgery. Some men are happy that the beard growth helps conceal the redness - especially if they feel uncomfortable using camouflage make-up.

Liposuction and Body contouring for Men

The ideal male body shape is considered trim and athletic-looking, with broad shoulders and chest, a flat abdomen, and a narrow hip-thigh area. However, as men age, areas of fat tend to accumulate around the abdomen, the flanks ("love handles"), the breast area (a condition called Gynecomastia), and along the chin and neck. Men sometimes seek Liposuction to remove these fatty areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Men retain their skin elasticity somewhat longer than women do, and the areas of fat beneath the skin tend to be firmer and more vascular. Because of these and other factors, Liposuction in men is usually very effective, although there may be greater associated blood loss, bruising, and swelling in the post-operative phase.

For Gynecomastia (Male Breast Enlargement), Liposuction is often effective. In some cases, an open surgical excision may also be performed on Gynecomastia patients whose Breast Enlargement is made up of mostly glandular tissue, rather than fat.

A full Abdominoplasty or "Tummy Tuck" is an option for men with hanging abdominal skin (usually the result of cycles of weight gain followed by weight loss), loose abdominal muscles, and/or neglected hernias. Abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure that removes excess fat, tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall, and trims the waistline. In more extensive cases, involving excess skin and fat around the entire circumference of the waistline, a Lower Body Lift may be required.

Male Rhinoplasty (Nose Re-Shaping)

With a somewhat greater likelihood of having experienced previous trauma to the nose from sports injuries, or simply as a result of the desire to remove an unattractive hump or excessive width of the nose, men seek rhinoplasty in nearly the same numbers as women overall. It is important to maintain the masculine character of the nose, avoiding excessive refinement or narrowing, which tends to produce a feminized appearance when taken to the extreme. Re-shaping procedures can often be combined with septoplasty or trimming of the turbinates in order to improve obstructed nasal breathing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will a Facelift change my beard or hair growth?
A: If there is a great deal of laxity in the face or neck area, the beard may be pulled back toward the sideburn area. In some cases, patients find that they need to shave behind the ears or further back toward the nape of the neck. These trade-offs can be minimized by alternative incision placements.

Q: Are there any extra precautions men must take when having a Facelift?
A: Because of the transient numbness in the cheek area after any facelift, men need to be extra cautious when shaving, to avoid nicks and cuts.

Q: Are there any greater risks for men having a Facelift?
A: Because of the greater vascularity of the facial skin in the beard area in men, there is a somewhat greater risk of bleeding (hematoma) after a Facelift in men. This can be minimized by meticulous surgical hemostasis, careful control of blood pressure both during and after the procedure, and avoidance of aspirin and other medications which may increase the risk of bleeding.

Q: How common is Gynecomastia (Male Breast Enlargement)?
A: It is estimated that nearly 40% of men suffer from some degree of Gynecomastia. The incidence is somewhat greater in men who use anabolic steroids, marijuana, or in those who consume excess amounts of alcohol, or are obese. In most cases, the actual cause is unknown.
